Where are Max Baucus supporters?

April 6th, 2008 by Wiley Cody

Senator Max Baucus really doesn’t spend much time in Montana. He raises his money out of state, he lives in Virginia and he drops $1,500 on steaks for his big-city friends on a single night out. He’s out of touch and it’s not just conservatives that are noticing it.

They were enthusiastic (if slightly less energetic due to the wine, beer and length of the program) for Hillary, and very friendly to Tester, Schweitzer and Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. But Max? During his time at the podium, people stepped outside for a smoke, used the bathroom, got themselves another drink or another hors d’oeuvre, wandered around the Civic Center, and visited with friends and colleagues. I think Cece perfectly summed it up in her post. Take note, Max.

do you think baucus is getting the hint yet. Pay attention to your constituents or we won’t pay attention to you. simple enough?

Ouch.

Even so, the papers report that everyone loves him - that he enjoys some of the highest approval ratings in the country. So when I see this from someone that you would think would be in his base - I find myself wondering:

Who are these supporters and why haven’t I met many of them?

Oh and you missed out on the argument I got into with one of his lovely staffers about the DC Vote, while waiting in line to get in.

There was quite simply a different energy in the entire room when Max got up to speak. And of all places that he should have support, dont you think it would be a democrat party?

‘Cause you’re an ass that no Baucus supporter would lower themselves to talk to? Just sayin’ …

Thank heavens for small favors.

You’re reading too much into it… Max was in the middle of hours of speeches, and everyone in the room has heard him oodles of times. Couple that with excitement running high in the room due to the nature of the event and some chatter during Max’s speech makes perfect sense. I was front and center and can unfortunately say that people talked just as much during Stephanie Herseth, Gov. Schweitzer’s and Sen. Tester’s speeches as well.

Hello Clearwater! You must be one of Max’s new campaign staffers. Welcome to Montana and to Cairn.

Understand, I’m not reading into things. I’m reading literally. From the Sinestra. My take is that most people are very lukewarm on Baucus - he’s no one’s hero. Certainly, I’ve yet to meet anyone excited about Max and that’s saying something since I live in Missoula.

Max does not live in VA, he lives in Georgetown.
