Pete Talbot is pissed. Go read it. Especially the section titled “Max gets jobs for Montanans Virginians”…
The next candidate who says they’re for jobs for Montanans and then spends their money on out-of-state production companies, ad agencies, printers, pollsters, etc., will receive some special attention.
Pete shouldn’t be too surprised that Baucus isn’t spending his significant campaign war chest in Montana. Consider:
1) Baucus lives in DC, which is a lot closer to Virginia than it is to Montana. It’s probably a lot easier to cut a commercial locally. Not only that, but spending that money in Virginia means that it will benefit the Virginia economy - which means the roads that Baucus drives on and the public services he enjoys will be much better. Win-win!
2) After a trip to India, Max Baucus famously said that “outsourcing white-collar jobs to low-wage countries such as India has become a global fact of life — and that America must learn to live with it.” Geeze, Montana get over yourself and learn to live with it already.
3) It’s not like it’s our money anyway. Remember, 91% of that money comes from outside Montana like Virginia anyway. Baucus has some backs to scratch, if you know what I’m saying.
4) Still wondering how many of those campaign staffers are from Montana…
PS - Jack talked about this way back when, but it’s a lot more fun when the righteous anger comes from the left.

I was wondering if one of the conservative blogs would pick up this post. I’m pissed at Max because I expect better from him. Can you say the same about your Republican candidates? You think they’re above reproach?
Just check Denny’s or Conrad’s campaign expenditures. Tell me they don’t spend as much money on out-of-state consultants, agencies, producers, etc., as the Democrats — maybe more.
I’ll keep on eye on my party. You keep an eye on yours.
I’ll be right there with you raking “my guys” over the coals if I think they deserve it. Last I checked, Conrad isn’t a candidate and Denny hasn’t raised $9 million from out of state. Last I checked, Denny still sleeps on his couch (something that he was criticized for in a recent Letter to the Editor) and comes back home to Montana - the only state where he owns or rents - whenever he can.
I understand your position Pete, and I appreciate your intellectual honesty. It seems like Max has invoked similar feelings in a lot of your Party comrades. Who says Republicans and Democrats can’t agree?!
Yes Cody, I imagine there are a few areas where Democrats and Republicans can agree.
My point is that Conrad (I know he’s not running again) spent the majority of his $7 million on out-of-state producers, printers, consultants, agencies, etc.
And you’re correct, Denny hasn’t raised as much as Max but let’s wait and see where Denny spends his advertising dollars before nominating him for sainthood.
No one’s nominating Denny for anything - and I think the point of my post was about 10% what you were upset about (that he’s spending his money out-of-state) and 90% that he raises his money and spends his time out-of-state.
The problem I have is that obligation tends to flow in the opposite direction as money. I don’t think the producers, consultants, printers, agencies, etc. feel they have any favors they can call in from Baucus, but I think maybe the out-of-state donors who Baucus is into for $9 million do.
